The first recorded racemeetings in Killarney were in 1822 and between that date and 1901 they were staged between two different courses in the area. They were then discontinued until the present course was opened in 1936.
The magnificent scenery is what draws the huge crowds to Killarney and the mountains and lakes that cradle the racecourse make it arguably the most beautiful in the country. Couple that scenery with a well-appointed racecourse, exciting racing and a large fun-seeking crowd and you have the ingredients for a heady cocktail of pleasure. You'll find the time flying down there. |

Irish Open stays on European Tour schedule for 2011 |
|
Tourism authority Failte Ireland has expressed confidence that the Irish Open will go ahead in 2011 despite the loss of its title sponsor. Mobile phone company 3 recently withdrew its backing for the tournament after two years as the main sponsors. Officials from the European Tour are keen for the event to survive and it has been pencilled in for 28-31 July. The Tour's director of international policy Keith Waters said the Irish Open was an integral part of the schedule. He said it was also important, given the strength of the Irish players on the Tour at the moment. "It is early days yet as it was only recently that we were without a sponsor for next year, and obviously we hope to find another one," Waters told the Irish Independent. "So yes, the Irish Open is continuing with full details to follow." Englishman Ross Fisher won the 2010 Irish Open at Killarney, finishing two shots ahead of Padraig Harrington. |
