Killarney National Park is an estate of 165,000 acres of magnificent open countryside wrapped around the lakes and mountains of Killarney. The centrepiece of which is the magnificent Muckross House and Gardens. The Lower, Middle and Upper Lakes form the backbone of the estate which was the ancestral home of the Kenmare Family and was bequeth by their descendants to the State of Ireland. These lakes and tributory rivers provide outstanding fishing and boating and this can be arranged from your Guesthouse/Bed & Breakfast or Hostel.
The mountain ranges include the McGillicuddy Reeks, which takes in Carrauntouhill, Ireland's highest peak, and walks and hikes can be arranged with guides from your Guesthouse, B&B or Hostel. Maps will be provided free. Travel from Ross Castle up through the Long Range over all three Lakes, traversing the 'Meeting of the Waters' (visited by Queen Victoria) and arrive at Lord Brandons Cottage in the Black Valley, then proceed on foot, by bicycle or on Jaunting (horse drawn) carriage down through the Valley and the Gap of Dunloe arriving at Kate Kearneys Cottage at the Gateway to savour an Irish Coffee before returning to Killarney Town.
The National Park is there for all to be enjoyed without expense, to travel by bicycle or to go hiking, to boat or to fish - the choice is yours. Where else in the world could you get a months entertainment without putting your hand in your pocket and return home refreshed, relaxed and entused.
